In this instance, the critical commentary does not concur with the student’s opinion. Critics may applaud what Edna did, but the student maintains that those very acts of defiance are what led her to poor decision-making and self-destruction.
Citing the critic gives the student something, a concept or notion, against which to react. Including critical commentary with which the student does not agree demonstrates that the student is entering into the discourse of literary criticism.
