Setting Analysis ~ Cold Mountain
Objective: To analyze the function of setting in one chapter of Cold
Mountain and to summarize the analysis for presentation to the class.
Assessment: An insightful analysis that recognizes the primary function of setting in that chapter and a succinct presentation to the class that clearly states the conclusion and adequate proof in the form of cause and effect statements. Written and oral responses will be evaluated together.
Procedure:
1.
Working
with your learning partner, review the chapter assigned to you. Recall the details of the setting,
remembering what details actually comprise setting. If necessary, refer to notes that identify the components of
setting. Be careful to leave nothing
out of your definition of setting.
2.
Review
the five functions of setting. Discuss
with your partner the primary function of setting in this assigned
chapter. Then determine two minor ways
in which the setting functions. For
example, in one chapter, setting may function primarily as antagonist to the
protagonist, but also reveals character and acts as a means of establishing
conflict.
NOTE: Because some functions are so closely
related, you must rely upon careful thinking and reasoning to determine the
most accurate analysis.
3.
Next,
carefully compose cause and effect statements that demonstrate how the details
of the setting confirm your analysis.
That is to say, if you determined that a particular part of the setting
serves to create appropriate atmosphere, you must explain how the detail
creates the atmosphere or mood.
4. Prepare your proof for presentation to the class. Be clear in your speech, concise in your delivery. Refer with details and use the terms and phrases from the notes and/or overhead transparencies.
